Frequently Asked Questions

What is FundFind?

FundFind is a new way to fund projects, startups, and innovations in South Africa using the proven method of rewards-based crowdfunding.

FundFind is powered by all-or-nothing and keep-what-you-raise funding methods. If using the all-or-nothing method, projects must be fully-funded or money is refunded. The project owner gets to keep all funds raised, if making use of the keep-what-you-raise method. It is up to the project owner to make sure that all rewards that have been promised are delivered, whether or not the funding target is reached.

Who can fund their project on FundFind?

FundFind is focused on helping South Africans to achieve their goals – whether they be creative goals, entrepreneurial goals, or anything in between. We are a great way for entrepreneurs, non-profits, artists, filmmakers, musicians, designers, writers, performers, small business owners, inventors and others to raise the funds that they need in order to get their projects off the ground. Anybody can submit a project onto FundFind as long as you are over the age of 18, have a valid South African bank account, and your project makes it through our screening process. A few examples of projects that can raise funds on FundFind:

  • A musician raising funds to record and distribute their debut album.
  • A software developer looking to raise funds for their latest mobile app.
  • An entrepreneur looking for startup capital to open up a doughnut shop.
  • An author looking for funds to independently publish a new novel.
  • A group of film-makers looking to produce a feature film, and need the funds to go into production.
  • A business that is already running looking to renovate their premises.
  • An engineer with an idea for the world’s most affordable car looking for funding to build his prototype.

Who can’t fund their project on FundFind?

FundFind will not approve the funding of ventures that are not seen as projects (ie. They do not have a defined beginning and end), anything that is illegal or offensive in nature. Examples of projects that wont be accepted would be:

  • A person looking for funding for their retirement.
  • An individual looking to raise funds to start a company that sells pirated or illegal goods.
  • A production company looking to riase funds to produce a pornographic film.

Once you have submitted your project proposal, FundFind will contact you to let you know if your project has been approved or not.

Why do people support projects?

People support projects for many reasons, but usually it’s because they want to be involved in what the campaign is doing or because they want the rewards that are part of the campaign.

Does FundFind take some percentage of ownership or intellectual property of things made through FundFind?

Absolutely not.

How do I start a project?

Click the “Submit your Project” link on the Home page or anywhere you see it. You’ll be asked to review and confirm the FundFind Guidelines, and then you can start putting your project together. Once you’re ready to launch, you’ll submit it to us for review, and someone from the FundFind will look it over, help you tweak it if needed, and get you going. Once your project is accepted, you’ll be able to launch it whenever you’re ready.

What does it cost?

FundFind is free to join. There is a fee on any funds that are raised, which is 5% of the money you raise on all-or-nothing projects and 9% of the money you raise on keep-what-you-raise projects. There is also a 6% fee that we charge to cover the transaction fees charged by our payment gateway. Remember to take these costs into account when setting your project’s funding target. You can cover these costs by setting your target just a bit higher than the actual amount that you need.

What funding strategies does FundFind offer?

FundFind offers 2 different funding strategies: All-or-nothing and Keep-what-you-raise.

With All-or-nothing, project owners will only receive the funds raised if they reach or surpass their funding target by the time their project deadline is reached. If the funding target is not reached by the time the deadline is reached, all funds are returned to the funders and the project owners receive nothing. They will have to re-evaluate their strategy and start again, if necessary.

With Keep-what-you-raise, project owners will receive all of the funds collected once the project deadline is reached, regardless of whether the funding goal has been reached or not. Think carefully about using this strategy if fulfilling the rewards you offer depend upon the amount of funds raised.

I only need to raise a small amount of funding. Is FundFind for me?

Absolutely! FundFind is for projects big and small, serious and whimsical, traditional and experimental, mainstream or alternative – if it intrigues people and can be of any value to people it belongs here! Small projects that you (or you and a few friends) can do over a weekend are perfect for FundFind. In fact, the most common projects on crowdfunding sites like FundFind are not blockbusters but smaller projects that raise R50 000 or less.

My project will take millions, is FundFind for me?

Well, the most anyone has raised on a crowdfunding platform is about $10 million. Is that enough? Be bold and give it a shot. With all-or-nothing funding, you can’t really miss.

What we have found is that a successful FundFind project makes you the edgiest, most attractive company/individual around. This drives additional investor attention and partnerships like you would not believe! It isn’t just about the funds you raise from the crowd, but also about showing that there is significant demand for your product or project.

What payment methods does FundFind accept?

FundFind uses PayFast as our payment gateway. At the moment we are able to receive payments via the following methods:

  • Credit Cards (Visa & MasterCard)
  • Instant EFT’s from South Africa’s “Big 4” Banks (FNB, Standard Bank, ABSA & Nedbank)
  • uKash
  • MiMoney

We are always taking suggestions on how to make your FundFind experience better, so contact us if you have any suggestions.

Do you recommend connecting with Facebook?

If you want to help the project(s) you are funding in a big way: Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, blog posts, and other social media connections and communications are awesome and we encourage you connect your FundFind account to ALL of the above.

What is Facebook Connect?

Facebook Connect is a way for you to link your Facebook account to FundFind so you don’t need to create a new account. It’s the same as logging in through Facebook. FundFind uses the email you use for Facebook, and you don’t have to remember a new password. It’s easy!

If you’re a FundFind (project creator) and you’ve turned on Facebook Connect, your Facebook username and friend count will be displayed in your FundFind bio (at the bottom-right corner of your project page). This helps funders learn more about the people behind the projects they support, and builds trust between the funder and creator.

If having your Facebook profile a click away makes you uncomfortable, you can either adjust your privacy settings on your Facebook profile or disconnect from Facebook through the “About You” section of your Edit Project page or on your account page.

No, Facebook Connect works for personal Facebook profiles only. If your project is a team collaboration, have one of your team members Facebook Connect to the project.
